You know how it works - the big fish eat the smaller fish and the smaller fish eat the little fish and ... and so on.
Uh-uh. Not any more.

You know how it works – the big fish eat the smaller fish and the smaller fish eat the little fish and the little fish eat the really mini fish … and so on. Uh-uh. Not any more.

Here’s a post that assumes that you, as a surfer, give a shit and feel part of the ocean, land and air system we call Earth. It’s a very pretty graphic put out by the Guardian newspaper using data from Dr. Villy Christensen of the University of British Columbia, one of the foremost centres of worldwide fisheries research.

And, ugh, it’s pretty graphic.

Below that is another info graphic showing which fish are OK to eat.

I could say, ‘Enjoy!’

But that would be inappropriate, so how about, ‘don’t buy tuna!’ or ‘quit eating fucking sushi!’

You get the jist.

Click here to start the graphic.

Here’s a chunk from a website called overfishing.org – kind of a guide to guides in different countries:

“Eating with a (clear) conscience A number of Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) maintain seafood guides / lists on fish to eat and to avoid. Aimed at consumers these lists are usually based on a simple colour system with green being good and red being bad. Not all list are of the same quality and not all NGOs follow the same methodology. In general these list do provide a good and easy buyers or consumers guide overview. Print a list on a small credit card sized piece of paper, stick it in you wallet, and always carry your environmentally friendly fish list with you! This overview is not as comprehensive as it can be and contributions, especially for new countries, are welcomed!

Here’s a little trailer for a 1969 surf film called Follow Me.
Have you seen it? We thought not.
Looks like the film was aiming for the perfect fusion of ‘Beach Blanket Bingo’ and ‘The Endless Summer’.
“Climaxed by the biggest surf ever filmed” …
Scintillating and sort of funny, and as it happens, it’s a pretty neat little time capsule. But somehow we don’t think it was the largest grossing documentary of its time.

Is Jordy Smith any good? There's no wiggle room here. As a surfer, he's quite possibly great.

Lose Yourself Somewhere

Is this video any good?
That’s up to you.
But is Jordy Smith any good? There’s no wiggle room here. As a surfer, he’s quite possibly great – one of the greatest of the era.
Why? Not because the mid-20s, shaggy-locked South African just won the ASP Tour event in Rio, Brasil. Nor because everyone says he’s got greatness in him and O’Neill pay him many millions just to surf great and look goofy.
He’s got greatness, I think, because he’s both strangely light-footed and hugely powerful. He can fling all the airs in the book – plenty enough to win at a small-medium beachbreak contest like Rio where the most airy-fairy pros are expected to perform their magic. But, aside from that, there’s no escaping the fact that Jordy Smith can make huge Sunset look like a childrens’ fun park.
He’s got Elkerton. Garcia. Ian Cairns. Even a touch of Noll about him. All somehow fused with the kind of anti-gravity ability that’s now an essential ingredient of modern pro surfing.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fawning fan trying to convert you, the viewer who doesn’t particularly give a shit either way. I’m just trying to point out that if you’re looking for one hell of a fusion of the two extremes of contemporary surfing, you might find it in this … thing. This … gorilla with wings.
This video doesn’t do him justice, but it offers two minutes of diversion that underlines the point..

Oh yeah, his sponsors are saying the same thing:
“O’Neill surfer, Jordy Smith has one of the strongest repertoires of any modern surfer. His raw and aggressive aerial skills are matched by his ability to utilise the entire rail of the board to shift liquid mountains and he does this all with a smile on his face and an easy going attitude. Filmed during the first half of 2013 in Western Australia and the long tapering walls of Bells Beach in Victoria. #loseyourselfsomewhere

Jumping in the ocean, a walk in the mountains, hitting the road or exploring a city back street; it’s always good to lose yourself for a bit. And when you do, take a photo, upload it to Instagram and tag #loseyourselfsomewhere and @oneilloz
