I was so stoked yesterday to not only test out my new Danny Hess EPS/Poplar/Cork wood Quad, but to also see two other riders on beautiful wood Tom Wegner Alaia’s. This is a sign of things to come, more eco-friendly boards out in the lineup proves that we are now walking the walk. As a nature photographer, environmental writer and surfer I feel that I must put my money where my mouth is and invest in a “greener” lifestyle.

Now that there are more and more green boards available it is possible for people who want to be a part of the global movement to step up and make an impact. Oh, and by the way, the two guys on their slim simple looking, yet highly tuned wood Alaia’s, were probably having more fun than anybody that day at Malibu. That is besides me, who got to realize a dream come true. The dream being to not only ride a more sustainable surfboard, but to ride one that went better than most boards I’ve ever owned or ridden. The Hess quad went insane, it’s extremely well suited for fast frontside walls, and it’s beautiful to look at.

Finally, a quick moving swell slammed us in the beginning of the week. I managed a few waves at a heaving beachie and spotted some primordial wave riders while surf checking along a secret coast of rock grinders. Here are the pics, the rider pulling in is up and coming shredder Dillon Perillo of Malibu, who managed to pop out of this thick tube amongst an explosion of white water. Till next time, the Greener the better, so check out the alternatives out there and don’t limit your self to what’s shoved down your throat.

Cheers,

At first even AI had trouble getting waves, but in true world champ form he went on to catch many, soaring over the crowd with huge boosts. These images show definite proof that he’s a member of the Birdman Tribe.
