Japan: How to Help

As the catastrophic events in Japan continue to morph following the earthquake and tsunami of March 10th, and now the ongoing nuclear horror, it’s hard to know what to do and what might realistically help.
In light of that, here’s a list of organizations that are operating in Japan and to which financial donations will be effective in saving lives or relieving suffering.

One note: Many of these organizations are asking donors NOT to specify that their aid must go to Japan. While we all want to help the people of Japan right now, groups like the Red Cross and MSF are large organizations that need our money for everything from buying and delivering food and medicine to stricken populations, but also for all the big and small daily stuff that keeps them running and ready, all over the world – paying permanent staff, printer ink, postage, petrol, insurance for vehicles etc. etc.
Since Japan is such a wealthy nation, there may be an excess of money from international donations and if e.g. the Red Cross can’t use it anywhere but Japan, your money might be tied up in an overflow fund there while its urgently needed at another disaster somewhere esle in the world.

Most of these NGOs will accept money by credit card, PayPal or even SMS Texting. Clicking on the name will take you straight to their websites where you can find out how to donate:

Red Cross

Medicin Sans Frontiers/Doctors Without Borders

The Japan Society

Global Giving Japan Earthquake and Relief Fund

Peace Winds Japan

World Vision Japan

Salvation Army

Islamic Relief

Christian Aid

Oxfam

WARNING:

Want to help? Great. Just don’t get ripped off.

The FBI has put up this important alert page for anyone thinking of donating to Japan or any other NGO aid schemes.
