The Bobby Martinez Paean, directed by Pete Santa Maria

Pete Santa Maria has put together a very clean and straight-forward homage to young gun Bobby Martinez, the Santa Barbara firebrand who at 16 won a record seven NSSA national titles in the USA and, after blazing through the WQS, was the ASP’s rookie of the year for 2006, winning two elite events (Mundaka and Teahupoo) on his debut tour. Martinez’ surfing is all fluid power and no-nonsense torque in the fine tradition of Dane Kealoha and Sonny Garcia. This fairly straight-forward doco tells the story via the usual assembly of talking heads but also gives us ample opportunity to kick back and watch the kid surf, which is, in a phrase, a total pleasure. He rips like a middleweight boxer, and this well-produced DVD plays it that way. Winner at the Huntington Beach Surf Film Festival. Mixed Tape is brought to you by Bobby’s sponsor, Reef. Props to them for shepherding this worthy project.
