Sunken Forest … like our consciousness, our
ancient roots … deep and rich, pulling images
and emotions from a primal place that compels
us with its pure familiarity. It’s in this voice, the
intuitive way he touches the strings, the sense
that all of it is an echo from some fundamental beyond.

Peter Joseph Burtt is a high-mountain surfer – lives at Lake
Tahoe on the California-Nevada border where he paddles to
stay fit, then hits it down the mountains on a three-hour cruise
to refresh himself at one of an array of satisfying spots on the
Sonoma County coast. Then, come late winter, he bags it and
indulges in a few deep Mexico soul-sessions.

This album is absolutely exquisite. Produced by Rounder
recording artist and my personal favorite blues/world artist in
the world, Corey Harris, the eerily evocative voice and kora (a
21-stringed African gourd instrument) tonalities achieved by
Burtt are absolutely astonishing. Just hear what he does with Bob
Dylan’s ol’ narrative, “Only A Hobo” … transcendant!

PJ’s previous CD, Travelogue, should have been reviewed in The
Surfer’s Path, but wasn’t, so this is to advise you that it, too, is as
splendid an atmospheric compilation of sounds and sentiments as
you’ll ever hear. Both these records are quietly magisterial … and
not so much surf music as the kind of music you want to hear on
a surf trip … from anywhere to anywhere. – DK
