Approaching Lines is stoked to announce that the first annual 5 to 1 Fin Fair, presented by Reef, will hit the UK on Saturday September 28th. Hosted at Porthtowan Beach, Cornwall, this gathering of finned fanatics aims to celebrate the art of wave-riding no matter what stick you ride. There will be an focus on style, with judges looking for smooth expressive surfing, linking power with flow and stoke whilst balls out going for broke.
With an emphasis on good vibes, good rides and good times, the contest consists of five categories: single fin; 2 fin / twinnie / fish; Thruster or any 3 fin set-up; 4 fin set up / quad; and finally 5 fin / Bonzer. Each category will progress through a knockout format, back-to-back 20 minutes heats, followed by a final to crown a winner in each class. A grand final will be held between the winners of each of the category, with the victor crowned the KING OF THE FINS. Veterans of the Slyder Cup gathering will be familiar with the format – part competition, part social gathering – with an emphasis on good times.
We are hosting a very special pre-event screening of ‘Compassing’ by Cyrus Sutton, with our friends from REEF, on Friday the 27th September at the Blue Bar, Porthtowan.
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE THREE ‘S’s – BE STOKED, SMOOTH and STYLISH
The surfer who exudes the most stylish surfing will advance and ultimately win the 5 to 1 challenge. Judges will be looking for smooth expressive surfing, linking power with flow and stoke whilst balls out going for broke. It’s not the difficulty of manouevre that counts, it’s the style with which it’s executed.
It’s all about panache and the way you cut a dash.
