The surf world was in shock and mourning today at the news that Andy Irons of Kauai, Hawaii passed away yesterday. Andy was a three-time World Champion and was universally revered as one of the finest surfers of his generation.
The cause of death is cited as a possible case of dengue fever, though this is as yet unconfirmed pending an autopsy report.
Andy, just 32, had been due to compete in the Rip Curl Search event in Puerto Rico but he missed his Round 1 heat three days ago due to an alleged high fever which rendered him bed-bound. He reportedly left the island to fly home to Kauai but passed away in a hotel while on a lay-over in Dallas, Texas.
Andy was survived by his wife Lindy, who’s 8 months pregnant, his brother Bruce and the rest of his loving family.
Surfers from the ASP World Tour, friends and fans from Puerto Rico paddled out at the Rip Curl Search event site at Middles today to honour AI.
