It wasn’t the warmest of days for the photo shoots, but with few people around the Surf’s Up! instructors had to strike while the going was good. “Off with them” came the Directors cry. And off they came…. the rashies, the boardies….. everything. Eight naked surfers stood poised for action. One by one they ventured into the water, only pausing to utter little shrieks as the water reached just below waist level. And one by one they paddled to catch some waves. The photo shoot would span over some two weeks, grabbing every opportunity to maximise the conditions. “I bet that took some balls”, commented a passing pensioner.
The Nude Dude Calendar is the latest mad cap idea from the Surf’s Up! instructor crew to generate funds for the Surf’s Up! Boardriders Club. Previous fund raisers included a record breaking paddle across the English Channel on surf boards. “What we’ve come up with is a cheeky little number that’s very light hearted – there’s some cracking shots in there,” commented the club founder Pete Craske. And it’s going down a storm. Over a thousand copies have already flown off the shelf.
Having recently won the British Club Championships, the club is on a high this year. With over 240 active members enjoying weekly after school sessions on Polzeath Beach and an elite squad of 50 including British Champs Toby Donachie and Harry Timson there’s always plenty going on – training, competitions, events, BBQs and travel abroad. “One of the biggest projects we’ve ever taken on is the forthcoming trip to Indonesia. New Zealand National Youth Coach, Kelly O’Toole who trains the elite squad three times a week is taking eleven of them aged 12 – 15 years old on a two week intensive training course over the February half term. If our surfers want to compete on the world stage then we need to get them surfing the best waves with the best instruction. This is pioneering, ground breaking stuff, but obviously we need to raise the money that allows us to be ambitious. Hopefully this calendar will help us to achieve our goals.” said Pete Craske.
The calendars are available either directly through Surf’s Up! Surf School (07760 126225) at Polzeath, or in local shops. Anyone interested in either buying a calendar or selling the calendars should contact Pete Craske on 07760 126225.
