Following in the footsteps of fellow Malibu surfer and Surfrider Foundation co-founder Lance Carson, Bon Purvey announces nonprofit status for his EcoMalibu preservation organization.
EcoMalibu’s MISSION is to restore clean and safe water at Malibu Surfrider, once and for all. Their VISION is to turn the heart of Malibu into a National Sanctuary, restore the historical wetlands and create an educational center to teach the values of our ecosystem. Their CHALLENGES are two major sources of pollution: the buildings and parking lots on top of the heart of Malibu’s wetland and in the middle of the floodplain, and the Tapia Sewage Treatment Plant.
Both areas of concern have made some progress in attempting to clean up the pollution, but both resist on making a meaningful change. A federally designated sanctuary would put in place laws that protect the historical wetland area and preserve its nature for the common good. They believe that along with community support and the will of the people, they can meet these challenges, as they did with the acquisition of the Chili Cook-off property.
Their wish is for safe recreational use of Surfrider but also to limit traffic into a one-way thorough fare and sensitive habitat area, which in-turn will gain greater respect from visitors to Malibu and a greater appreciation of the area.
They’ve started by putting up an interactive website that is full of valuable and important information, interactive and easy understand. Learn from it and also be entertained by it. Of course, the website is a constant work-in-progress, so comments and suggestions are welcomed.
