Last week we ran an incredible video of Portuguese/German surfer Nic von Rupp in Ireland. He cancelled his flight to Hawaii and detoured to Sligo where rode giant waves and some jaw-dropping tubes.
Looks like it paid off for Herr von Rupp. He finally made it to Hawaii just as the Volcom Pipeline Pro was ready to kick off in the best Pipe swell of the season. When it was his turn to give the ultimate barrel a go, Nic started his heat with the dream Pipeline wave. He’d barely ever surfed Pipeline before, let alone caught a bomb, and this wave had the beach on its feet and the commentators doing their “Who dat guy?” act.
Seems like a little pre-Polynesia training in the Emerald Isle was exactly the right call.
Nic won that first heat, but didn’t get through the next round. Maybe because the waves dropped off a bit.
Still, the Volcom event was a blast to watch. Huge Pipe on Day two followed by dredging Backdoor for the final day. Guess who won? Yeah, John John The Unstoppable Florence. See highlights down at the bottom.
