Fundraiser for Niall Mellon South Africa Township project
Bundoran, Co. Donegal is well known for its excellent outdoor activity facilities, especially surfing and horseriding. Tullan Strand, Bundoran is a popular destination for the many many visitors who use the beach for surfing and equestrian events, and on August 18th, it is going to be the location for Ireland’s largest single surf lesson!
There are three surf schools in Bundoran: ‘Turf n Surf’, ‘Bundoran Surf Company’ and ‘Donegal Adventure Centre’. Local surf shop ‘Surfworld’ and equestrian school ‘Donegal Equestrian Centre’ are also joing in the fun to provide an excellent day’s activity at the beach. It is expected that the surf lesson will see 130 people in the water, supervised and coached by twenty qualified surf instructors from the three Bundoran surf schools.
The launch for Ireland’s largest surf lesson will take place at 10pm on Friday August 17th at The Chasin’ Bull, Bundoran. There will be a beach party, hosted by Bundoran’s lovliest divas, ‘The Surfchixxx’. The evening will include prizes for best beach fancy dress, and an auction of qualitty musical and surf products, and various other entertainments.
On Saturday, allcomers will be welcomed to Tullan Strand, Bundoran with an escort by a horse-drawn surfboard trailer through Bundoran at lunchtime. At 2pm in Tullan Strand Carpark, a free live music line-up will include Reject Dolls, Sk/d, The Jetsons, Worldwide Freeride, Surfchixxx and superb locals ‘Falloni’.
Donegal Equestrian Centre will be providing beginner Pony Rides, and at 6pm, surf instructors will line up all of the participants of Ireland’s largest surf lesson. It is hoped that we will have over a hundred volunteers for the surf lesson, and alcomers with sponsorship cards will be accommodated. Surf and Pony rides will also be available for a small fee for those who don’t have sponsorship cards.
Ireland’s largest Surf lesson is a fund raising event, and all proceeds will go towards The Niall Mellon South Africa Township Project. Two Bundoran locals, Seamus and Carol Fallon are travelling to South Africa next November, to be part of a huge drive by 1,300 volunteers to build 200 houses in seven days. All those who wish to take part can collect a sponsorship card and register for either the surf lesson, or the beach pony rides.
There will be collections at the Friday Evening beach party and all day Saturday at Tullan Strand for this worthy cause. Corporate and business sponsors are invited to support this fund raising drive. People can also sponsor Seamus and Carol directly through the ‘Sponsor a volunteer’ facility on

Beginners and non-surfers are all welcome to register to particpate in Ireland’s largest surf lesson. All you need is a swimsuit, t-shirt and old runners or flip-flops. Whether you are an experienced surfer, or haven’t dipped a toe in the water for years, this is your chance to be part of a fantastic and worthy day in Ireland’s surf capital, Bundoran.
