I met John Peck in 1961, he was living in Iroquios Point in Ewa Beach. I was 13 and just learning how to ride waves. John already had a reputation for riding Makaha when he was 14 or 15 in 25 to 30 foot waves! I saw him surf a couple of times back then. His style and grace on a board back then was spectacular. He even shook my hand and said hello to me, as a kook it was quite an honor for me, as most surfers back then hardly recognized beginning "gremmies". When surfer mag. put him on the cover it was cool to see a guy I knew become one of the most famous surfers of that era. I later met up with him in 68 where he lived with 2 friends of mine named Simon Bebb and John LeGrande on Sunset Point. 6 months later I saw John LeGrande and asked about Mr. Peck. He said "Oh, John Peck! He's living down the beach in a tree! Strange, but he's the smoothest surfer I ever saw. Troy Mize ex Hawaiian surfer from the 60's. p.s.
