Tom Curren's first Wave at Jeffrey's Bay from Live The Search Series

Alex Dick-Read

Here’s a neat little retrospective series from Rip Curl, delving into their company archives and harking back to the days – mid ’90s – when the coolest thing happening in the surf-media-industry nexus was The Search – a series of films and features centering on Tom Curren who, at that stage, was done with the world tour and happy just to explore and be the best surfer in the world, set free on the world’s best waves.
Here, cinematographer Sonny Miller Digs into what became recognized as something of a moment. Why? Because few people can ride JBay really well, and none of them could ride it like genius on their first wave on a board they’ve never ridden before.
Only Tom Curren.
